Hojarasca® Cookies from El Nopal Bakery®

We’re thrilled to offer Hojarasca® Cookies to Café visitors, featuring the original recipe created by Francisco and Celia Bonilla, founders of El Nopal Bakery®. The cookies were a staple of the bakery, a Chicago institution that opened on January 1, 1954, and operated for over 60 years in Pilsen and later at a second location in Little Village. The Bonillas’ son Frank helped run the bakery until he retired in 2015.

To honor his parents, Frank began writing their history, and he shared the recipe with CHM so their legacy could continue. Try these delicious cookies today, and learn more about the legacy of El Nopal and this taste of Chicago history.
