Day of Remembrance
Sunday, February 19, 2:00–4:00 p.m.
The Day of Remembrance commemorates February 19, 1942, when President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. It led to the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. This program features Anne Shimojima, a professional storyteller who delights audiences with spirited folktales reflecting her Japanese American heritage. In Hidden Memory: One Family’s Journey During World War II, she tells the story of her 97-year-old aunt’s journey from her hometown of Portland, Oregon, to the Tule Lake, California, concentration camp, and finally to Chicago.
